Crossposting a thread from my bluesky (same @) bc the brain worms are worming 🪱
Mmm I'm having onions about the "Jayce/Viktor goes back in time to destroy Hextech in its infancy" trope. Not that I'm ragging on anyone who uses it, I've read beautiful fics based on it, I just. Can't agree with the premise that Hextech is evil, I guess. Call it #Heimerdingerism
If it's a "Hextech will lead to terrible things in every universe" thing, I want it to be because they're flawed people in every flawed world, and interests can get corrupted and manipulated and led astray. Maybe Hextech is doomed because it's power, and power will always be sought by those who want to use it. So I can fw Hextech being doomed by human fallibility and the inherent corruption of power structures, not because magic itself or sharing it through technology is Bad. Still don't think there isn't a world (or many worlds) where the good of Hextech is worth it, even if it's balanced by evil, like. Are computers bad because they're used for drone strikes? Should we go back in time and murder Charles Babbage?
Granted, I think the hexcore was a bad idea. It was born out of loneliness and desperation and clearly fed on those weaknesses to further its own agenda outside of Viktor's control, which isn't a good sign for any technology. So just don't feed a MacBook your blood and I think we're good. As for the pollution, that's a clear example of technology molding to the structures of society. Piltover didn't care to build the Hexgate so it wouldn't pollute Zaun. That's not a flaw of Hextech, it's a flaw of Piltover. Piltover also chose to use teleportation magic for profit, something inevitable in a power structure with money at the top, again not a flaw of magic or Hextech. Idk, I think it's just a bummer to see two inventors narratively punished for the flaws of their world.
Now, do Jayce and Viktor believe the mistakes that led to the near end of their world were purely their own? Probably. I just hope to see/write more stuff where the narrative doesn't necessarily agree with them. ✌🏻❤️

Applying for my Master's in gender studies kind of feels like shooting myself in the foot, but then again, it's not a useless discipline if it's being systematically censored and erased.

The technological society… will not be a universal concentration camp, for it will be guilty of no atrocity. It will not seem insane, for everything will be ordered, and the stains of human passion will be lost amid the chromium gleam. We shall have nothing more to lose, and nothing to win. Our deepest instincts and our most secret passions will be analyzed, published, and exploited. We shall be rewarded with everything our hearts ever desired. And the supreme luxury of the society of technical necessity will be to grant the bonus of useless revolt and of an acquiescent smile. (p. 427)
This sharp paragraph was not written in the 1990s, nor in the 2010s, nor in recent years. It appeared in French sociologist and philosopher Jacques Ellul’s treatise The Technological Society, originally published in 1954 and translated into English with Robert Merton’s introduction in 1964. Ellul was concerned with the emergence of a technological tyranny over humanity and the totality of efficiency, and in this classic book he masterly elaborated on these substantial issues. Quite a few claimed 70 years ago and even decades later that Ellul was too provocative, that he overstated and exaggerated. Rereading his significant and penetrating observations in the current age evokes different thoughts and reactions. What is certain is that we are only at the beginning of this age. So is it possible that even we are far from understanding the essence of Ellul’s alerting words?
To reflect more on this crucial topic dive into these insightful books for which Ellul’s The Technological Society laid the groundwork: — Beer, David. 2019. The Social Power of Algorithms. Routledge. — Fisher, Eran. 2022. Algorithms and Subjectivity: The Subversion of Critical Knowledge. Routledge — Fisher, Max. 2022. The Chaos Machine: The Inside Story of How Social Media Rewired Our Minds and Our World. Little, Brown and Company. — Schwarz, Ori. 2021. Sociological Theory for Digital Society: The Codes that Bind us Together. John Wiley & Sons. — Zuboff, Shoshana. 2018. The Age of Surveillance Capitalism. Profile Books

I think the only media you can be precious about are books and like maybe some indie games. A movie that's at least ten years old.

The champions of the digital adopt an absurd line of argument (absurd in the sense of Freud's story of the kettle): 1. It is a revolution, an absolute advance. 2. At any rate, we have no choice, the process is irreversible. But it must be one or the other: if it is inevitable, there's no point representing it as an ideal dimension. And if it's destined to win out, there's no point claiming it is best.

Values and Consciousness
Deeper into Unity Consciousness Universal Consciousness  Consciousness is, by definition, the ability to make value judgments. To be conscious is to be aware — of something. Of what, exactly? I would argue that it is to be aware of the existence of value. To be aware that there are things of inherent value and other things of lesser or no value — in other words, to have a value system. To be…

me: oh wow an ffxiv theory/meta post! i love these even when i don't agree with them. i wonder if this person will highlight an underdiscussed aspect of the setting, or reframe someone's characterization interestingly the post: "in the original japanese--" me: unsubscribed. blocked. reported. hie thee hence and never darken my door again.
#ffxiv#it's written in tokyo! we are talking about people who if they had a translation question could *walk down the hall and ask the writer*#it's not the english version's fault that you're a coward who's afraid of subtext and subtler characterization#even if it was intended as direct translation 99% of you lack the japanese fluency to appreciate any degree of nuance#and you frankly clearly can't appreciate nuance in english to begin with! so how could you know if it's conveyed correctly.#my favorite example is haurchefant. a lot of people complain about him being 'toned down' in english#which 1) he is. it's culturally necessary. if EN haurchefant talked about your sweat and offered you a 'warm bed' he'd be loathed#he'd come off as sexually aggressive towards women and as bad mlm rep. fans would DESPISE him.#different audiences have different values. he has to be written slightly differently to land in the same way he does in the original.#2) no he's really not. like sure the text of his lines gets toned down. but he's still absurdly into you. he's still a weirdo thrillseeker#there's still SHIRTLESS MEN WORKING OUT IN HIS OFFICE LOL#a lot of people complain that the english version is too aggressive or people are too mean and it's like...these are different contexts#like there's sooo many alisaie lines where people are like 'she's more of a cute tsundere in jp she's mean in english' and like.#alisaie is 100% an american tsundere in english. the localization team just knows how tsundere archetypes come off in english#which is to say straightforward tsundere shit tends to scan in english as either incredibly childish or cumbrained nonsense#and they have in turn written her with just a slightly lighter hand and more culturally intelligibly in english#she's a teenage girl who covers her sensitivity and inability to stop caring by putting on an abrasive front. that's a tsundere#alisaie is sort of an insane feat of localization. new levels of technology previously unheard of#'alisaie is like my badass wlw little sister' okay...yes. let's go with that. please ignore the ass shots in the trailers.#shitpost: i got a good feeling

So I mentioned to my dad that I'd really like to own the same necklace pendant as "a character from a video game I like a lot" and was wondering if we could make it ourselves.
He told me to send him a few pictures of - and after doing some 3D modeling he brings me THIS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is only the (very messy) first draft. It's still very much a work in progress but we're getting there and I am very excited :3
I will paint it silver later just to see how that looks, but this project is far from finished - my dad himself expressed that wants to work on it more.
He's not entirely satisfied with the 3D sculpt yet so he might adjust that a bit. But it think it's very recognizable already (if you're familiar with Dragunov's main tk8 outfit) and i like the shape of it. Which matters the most.
We're brainstorming a lot on what materials to make the pendant with: - This one here was 3D printed with a very simple filament printer as a test (hence why it looks so messy). It would look much smoother and nicer if we printed it with a resin printer (which I might actually have access to). 3D printing would allow all the raised details to be where they have to be and I can just paint the pieces silver later. The problem with 3D printing though is the plastic is pretty light so the pendant would probably not fall and pull the necklace down as naturally as a real razor blade pendant made from metal would. - There is a possibility of making it with metal if we find the right materials though! My dad's friend is a jeweler and the two of them are actually testing out a new machine that cuts and engraves metals with a laser (i forgot what it's called exactly, but it's very cool to me). The 3D details would be lost with this method but those can be imitated with proper engraving or something - my dad already has a plan on how to approach this. And the metal pendant would have its proper weight to it so it would look a little better.
There's pros and cons to both methods. We will have to play around with whichever materials are available to us and see where the creativity takes us. But I am keeping an open mind and looking forward to see what he can cook up!!

Sure an increasing number of career fields require people to send tens of emails a day. Including to just navigate society.
Sure a lot of people suffer with executive dysfunction and/or just aren't very good at writing.
Sure the moral panic is stretching the definition of "plagiarism" to its absolute limit.
BUT IF YOU USE THE TOOL THAT MAKES NAVIGATING MODERN SOCIETY SUBSTANTIALLY LESS DAUNTING YOU SHOULD GO TO HELL!
